Summary module description:
This module will provide the students with an understanding and working knowledge of key issues in research a with a view to applying this knowledge in their research dissertation.

Aims:
1) to introduce students to some of the key issues in research; 2) to provide students with the means to investigate and critically evaluate different approaches, designs, data collection methods and forms of analysis; 3) to improve students’ confidence in using key methods, and their ability to describe these to others; 4) to develop students’ ability to synthesise complex novel information presented orally; 5) to instruct students about the literature review process.

Assessable outcomes
•Demonstrate an awareness of a range of approaches and methods in research at the graduate level, for instance by attendance at departmental research seminars;
•Critically summarise and evaluate these approaches and methods in relation to particular research hypotheses/questions;
•Conduct, prepare, and present a Literature Review;
•Show a practical knowledge of basic data exploration and be able to communicate this knowledge to others.

Additional outcomes:
•Demonstrate familiarity with a wide range of literature and resources relevant to research;
•Use the web as a resource for learning and research
•Demonstrate a range of skills relevant to research, according to particular classes and assessments chosen in the School of Psychology and Clinical Language Sciences.

Brief description of teaching and learning methods:
There will be a number of one-off sessions in the Department of Clinical Language Sciences in the Autumn term on the above listed topics.

Summative assessment- Coursework and in-class tests:
Four compulsory Abstracts of Research seminars, each maximum 500 words. You attend 1:00pm Thursday seminars in term over Autumn and Spring terms. You can also attend Tuesday seminars (where appropriate) but these are optional. If you choose to write an abstract of the seminar you had attended, it is due on Friday of the following week. You must write up your first abstract by week 5 of the Autumn term. You are also required to submit a literature review which is due at the end of the Spring term.
