Summary module description:

Aims:
This module aims to provide students with an understanding of communication impairments arising from acquired or congenital abnormalities in cognitive functioning or perceptual processing. Students will gain an understanding of the neurobiological, cognitive and behavioural nature of communication impairments arising from a range of aetiologies and will be able to identify the role of the SLT in assessment and management.

Assessable learning outcomes:
By the end of this module, it is expected that the student will be able to:
•Identify and understand the contribution of a wide range of cognitive and perceptual processes to communication.
•Identify and understand the nature of acquired and congenital progressive and non-progressive cognitive impairments which can lead to communication impairments.
•Understand the impact of congenital hearing impairment on communication development.
•Recognise and identify linguistic and non-linguistic symptoms associated with cognitive impairments of different aetiologies.
•Understand the different implications of acquired degenerative, acquired non-degenerative and congenital cognitive impairments for assessment and management.
•Reflect on the implications of different lifespan stages on client needs and how this affects assessment and management.
•Understand the social implications of linguistic, cognitive or perceptual impairments for members of different social groups e.g. hearing-impaired population.
•Recognise and identify the role of the speech and language therapist within the multidisciplinary team in the assessment and management of individuals with cognitive and perceptual impairment.

Additional outcomes:
The module aims to encourage students to develop critical analytical skills and to synthesise information from a variety of sources to develop holistic understanding of different theoretical areas. Students will also be encouraged to make conceptual links between different literature bases and to apply knowledge from multiple domains in a flexible manner.

Outline content:
The module provides introductions/summaries to a number of special client populations. The causes and diagnosis of acquired cognitive impairment and developmental learning disability are addressed. Developmental disorders are considered from different lifespan stages. The impact of hearing impairments on language and social development are explored and approaches to assessment and management are discussed. Developmental and acquired language impairments in the bilingual population are explored. These specialist populations and the impact of the different aetiologies on communication are considered from a range of perspectives: neurobiological, neurolinguistic, sociocultural etc. This module intends to compare and contrast these specialist populations, facilitating conceptual links and identifying areas of difference. Management needs and approaches across the lifespan are explored.
