Summary module description:
This module runs for 34 weeks, beginning with an 8-week intensive introduction to Academic English in the Summer. For the remaining 26 weeks, the module runs concurrently with IF0IE1 International English providing 2 hours/week of language support.

The module complements IF0IE1 International English A, and aims to develop students' confidence, competence and skills in the use of English for academic purposes, from a basis where their command of English shows significant weaknesses.
This will help them to cope with the linguistic demands of the International Foundation Programme.

Assessable learning outcomes:
By the end of the module, it is expected that students will be able to:

• present ideas, arguments and information with clarity and reasonable accuracy both orally and in written form using appropriate academic register and conventions

• identify key information, comprehend texts at both sentence and paragraph level and make notes from listening and reading material

• use academic structures and vocabulary with increased confidence and accuracy

Additional outcomes:
By the end of the module, it is expected that students should be able to apply the above skills to a range of academic contexts and topics including: ethics, the environment, language, health, learning and business.

Outline content:
The module requires students to use and exploit language which is specific to the requirements of their IFP modules and their future undergraduate study, by developing the following skills:

1. Listening skills: Understanding main and supporting ideas; identifying stance and perspective; simple comparative and cause and effect relationships; students will also be introduced to note taking on extended listening

2. Reading skills: comprehension at sentence and paragraph level; text analysis; identifying the writer's stance; understanding main ideas; understanding comparison / contrast, cause / effect and argument texts.

3. Writing skills: To develop accuracy in simple and compound sentences and to develop paragraph writing skills. In particular, to focus on describing processes, writing definitions and describing cause and effect relationships. Students will also be introduced to essay planning and writing.

4. Speaking skills: participating in discussions and expressing opinion; presentation skills.

Brief description of teaching and learning methods:
The module includes small group interactive lectures involving a variety of methodologies including pair and group work and task based activities. Feedback and feed-forward techniques are employed through a process of draft writing tasks to aid in learner development.

Tasks are carefully scaffolded to develop learner confidence with the skills; progressively more independent work will be required over the duration of the module.

Students will also be expected to take responsibility for their own learning by setting goals and making regular use of the university library and SACLL (Self Access Centre for Language Learning). Classroom activities are supported by online learning activities available on the University VLE, Blackboard.

Other information on summative assessment:

In the summer term, regular, short summative assignments cover oral and listening skills, vocabulary and reading, and writing at paragraph level. Class tests held in examination conditions at the end of the each term test students' ability to apply the reading into writing skills covered in each term as well as testing vocabulary and academic language use

Formative assessment methods:
At the start of the course students compose a series of short paragraphs and written responses to short questions; these are used to analyse their strengths and weaknesses linguistically and in terms of academic practice.
Students complete 4 weekly formative assessments, so as to integrate the feedback provided to prepare for their summative assessments

Penalties for late submission:
The Module Convenor will apply the following penalties for work submitted late, in accordance with the University policy.

  • where the piece of work is submitted up to one calendar week after the original deadline (or any formally agreed extension to the deadline): 10% of the total marks available for the piece of work will be deducted from the mark for each working day (or part thereof) following the deadline up to a total of five working days;
  • where the piece of work is submitted more than five working days after the original deadline (or any formally agreed extension to the deadline): a mark of zero will be recorded.

    You are strongly advised to ensure that coursework is submitted by the relevant deadline. You should note that it is advisable to submit work in an unfinished state rather than to fail to submit any work.

    There is no final examination for this module.

    Requirements for a pass:
    40% to pass the module academically

    Reassessment arrangements:
    By examination in August/September with coursework marks carried forward if it is to the student's advantage.
