Summary module description:
The module is developed to provide career opportunities for our construction management, quantity, building and surveying students through engaging with companies. This module draws upon ALL the other modules in the programme. In particular it should develop the understanding of professional and technical practice gained by students in CE2CPP,CE2CMB consolidate your employability activities and provide a useful launch-pad for the other modules in your Part 3 Specialism. This is reinforced by engagement in module CE3CBM.

Aims:
The module aims to provide students with an opportunity to: extend the knowledge gained in the first two years of the programme; understand the business context in relation to their chosen specialism; enhance students understanding, skills and employability; and reflect on professional practice.

Assessable learning outcomes:
•evaluate work placement roles within the organisation, drawing upon relevant academic understandings and perspectives
•critically evaluate the work undertaken by students in relation to their UG programme and relevant professional codes of practice
•understand how the skills of students fit into an organisational context
•Identify the criteria necessary for students to enhance their value to the organisation in the context of graduate employment.

Additional outcomes:
•enhance student potential employability on graduation
•provide students with greater understanding of workplace requirements and the organisation’s criterion for graduate recruitment
•develop student ability to work with others in team environments
•consolidate the relationship between student academic studies and their application in practice
•build students personal self-confidence, sense of responsibility and inter-personal skills.

Outline content:

Students are offered the opportunity of specialist lectures in Part 2 and access to the University Careers Service for assistance in the preparation of CV’s, on line testing, telephone interviews and face to face interview techniques.



The students will keep adequate records of their placement and upon return to university will prepare a reflective critical analysis of their time in practice as well as a presentation and preparation of a poster showcasing their e xperience.

The precise content is in the course of agreement with the industrial partners which by their scale and function provide a rich variety of employment experience, ranging from domestic work through to international operations

Brief description of teaching and learning methods:
This module should draw upon the content of ALL the other modules in the programme which are aligned to the nature of the work placement. In particular it should develop the understanding of professional and technical practice gained in CE2CBM, consolidate student employability activities and provide a professional and practical context for the other modules in the students Part 3 Specialism. The student will draw from the day-to-day placement activities and interact in a professional manner w ith other staff. The University staff visits will allow these activities and interactions to be reviewed. The record of placement to be compiled sequentially throughout the placement period.

Submission of a 1500 word critical analysis of an aspect of their placement and a supporting professional diary. Students will also undertake a group presentation and prepare individual posters showcasing their time in Practice.

Penalties for late submission:

The Module Convener will apply the following penalties for work submitted late, in accordance with the University policy.
• where the piece of work is submitted up to one calendar week after the original deadline (or any formally agreed extension to the deadline): 10% of the total marks available for the piece of work will be deducted from the mark for each working day (or part thereof) following the deadline up to a total of five working days;
• where the piece of work is submitted more than five working days after the original deadline (or any formally agreed extension to the deadline): a mark of zero will be recorded.

You are strongly advised to ensure that coursework is submitted by the relevant deadline. You should note that it is advisable to submit work in an unfinished state rather than to fail to submit any work.

Assessment requirements for a pass:

A minimum mark of 40% based on the presentation,  report and presentation.
