An international, global-facing, and supportive community

Join a friendly and welcoming department that will support you on your transition to university, throughout your degree course and beyond.

With talented and award-winning staff from four different continents, our outlook and experience is truly global. We are an inclusive community with a designated building where you will find a languages resource centre and study area.

We have an excellent staff-to-student ratio: this enables us to get to know you as an individual, and to develop a personalised approach to your learning.

Our student community is highly collaborative and connected. We support student-led initiatives and the various language societies that organise opportunities to socialise outside the classroom.

"My academic tutor has been amazing. I know if I need anything I can just go to her or drop her an email and she will get back to me straightaway and work out a time. The staff create a comfortable environment where you can ask for help."

An interdisciplinary approach to the study of languages

The Department of Languages and Cultures brings together a diverse and talented community of academics who combine the study of modern languages with linguistics, history, literature and culture, politics, film, and the visual arts.

At Reading, you will have the opportunity to master the languages of your choice. You will learn about the rich histories and cultures that your languages of choice unlock.

We have a wide range of resources that are unique to Reading. We use our world-leading archives in our culture teaching to enrich your experience of studying French, Italian, German, and Spanish.

Your year abroad

You will spend your third year abroad either working, studying or teaching. Spending a year abroad provides you with an exciting opportunity to master your chosen languages and gain new skills and experiences.

You will put into practice all that you have learnt so far. You will have the opportunity to meet new friends and enjoy new experiences. You will explore different countries, and learn more about the people that voice their experience through the languages of your choice.
