Reading Connections Project: Local Collections

This page provides information about the work that was undertaken on the project relating to the theme Local Collections.

Photographic Collections

Arborfield_PondWork has been carried out on local history collections relating to Reading's rich photographic heritage. This included the digitisation and cataloguing of over 8,000 photographic negatives from the Collier and Dann-Lewis photographic collections held at MERL, as well as 1,900 photographic negatives from the Reading Chronicle held at Reading Museum. Click here to read a blog post on the Reading Chronicle digitsation work.

Other work relating to local collections also included creating an online A-Z index of archive collections at MERL.

The project has also engaged with local communities to reveal the wealth of resources held by MERL and Reading Museum, and has also learnt from these communities through discussion, oral history and contact with collectors.

Whilst digitising the local collections we have come across many glass negatives that have little or no information about the subjects in them. Can you help us? Please take a look at our gallery of unidentifed images to see if any of the places look familiar!
