Thatcher: Thatching is an ancient method of roofing country buildings, the popularity of which has fluctuated over the centuries.

Most associated with the 'picturesque' cottage and farm, thatch also once provided the roofing material for many larger scale buildings such as churches and some castles. The cheap availability of other roofing materials such as tiles and slates, especially from the 19th century, led to the steady decline in the use of thatch. Today, enough thatched buildings survive to keep a small band of thatchers employed and maintain the viability of the craft.
