About us
Welcome to the home of the University of Reading SIAM-IMA Student Chapter!
We are a student chapter of the Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics (SIAM) and the Institute of Mathematics and its Applications (IMA), run by a committee of PhD students from the Department of Mathematics and Statistics (MathsStats) at the University of Reading.
We aim to encourage the exchange and development of ideas and information from different mathematical backgrounds and at various stages of study, via a programme of events and activities throughout the year. We also hope to develop links to industry, through partnerships with relevant organisations, to provide our members with information and insight into continuing mathematical research as a career option.
Events include:
- Welcome events: to introduce our new committee at the start of the academic year and to welcome students back in the new term
- Seminars: we host a fortnightly seminar series with internal and external PhD students presenting their work
- Annual Conference: we host a conference each year around May/June where we invite keynote speakers, student speakers and student posters
You are welcome to contact us personally if you are interested in joining our committee! We are always happy to hear from you, also if you are from different backgrounds, including meteorology or computer science or anything maths related.

Welcome to the New Year Party
At the beginning of each year the chapter hosts a party for new (and old) PhD students from the maths, computer science and meteorology department. This year's party was on the 9th February and we enjoyed a fun evening with free pizza, beer and drinks and board games. Thank you everyone for joining and making it an amazing event!
SIAM-IMA student chapter conference 2021
We host an annual conference where we invite senior researchers and PhD students to present their work. This year in June we were delighted to virtually welcome Prof. Francoise Tisseur, Dr. Naratip Santitissadeekorn, Prof. Jan Sieber and six early career researchers and the conference was a great success.
