Placement in industry

Choosing to take a placement year enables our students to gain experience of working in industry as part of their degrees.

Students who undertake a placement in industry will, on average, find employment more quickly. They are also shown to have a higher starting salary that their peers who have not taken work experience (the Brunel report on Destinations of Leavers from Higher Education 2009/10).

All of our courses have the option of a paid year in industry. To improve your chances of securing a placement, we have a Placements Team who are available to support students with their applications and interviews.

There is a wide range of year-long placements open to highly numerate students. Placement opportunities that have been advertised in the past year have included positions in business research, logistics, finance, medicine and health, technology, market intelligence, aerospace engineering, insurance and risk and the civil service.

Students who are unable to take a placement year, but who want to enhance their employability skills, are encouraged to arrange alternative forms of work experience such as paid summer internships.

“My experience here on placement has made me stronger, and I have definitely adapted to ways of dealing with issues I never dealt with before.”

Gwenllian Perry,  MMath Mathematics with Placement Year student at Thames Water

“A sound education is great, and short training courses are also important, but nothing beats real-life job experience when deciding who to hire.”

Dr Kerry Gordon – Executive Director, Biostatistics Europe/Japan Quintiles
