Requesting an inter-library loan

1. Check the Library catalogues

Check carefully to see if the item you need is held in the Library collections in print or online.

Search the Enterprise catalogue for the author's surname and title keywords. Also try searching for just the title or author of the book in case some details are misspelled in the reference you have.

Search for the title of the journal on the Enterprise catalogue and the
E-journals Finder to check if we have it in print or online.

Ask your Academic Liaison Librarian for help if you are unsure.

British PhD theses

These are not normally available on inter-library loan but you can order a British thesis via EThOS.

How many requests can I place?

As a guide we offer the following allowance of inter-library loan requests per year to University members, free of charge.

Who you are Number of requests per year
Undergraduates 5
Taught Postgraduates 5
Associate Members 10

Taught students requiring several items may wish to arrange a research trip to the British Library or another University library. See our information on using other libraries.

We understand that some researchers may need more than their allowance when undertaking systematic reviews or in-depth research projects. If you think it likely you will require more than the above allowance, please contact the inter-library loans team to discuss specific requirements and possible costs.
