Copyright declaration

What is the Copyright Declaration?

If you want us to obtain a photocopy or Secure Electronic Delivery (SED) we would normally have to pay the copyright owner a fee for reproducing their work. However, if you only require the copy for non-commercial research or private study and can sign the copyright declaration, you will qualify for an exemption from this fee.

how much can I ask to be copied for me?

The copyright declaration does not stipulate the proportion of a work that can legally be copied on your behalf, but libraries usually operate according to the principles of fair dealing, which permits one article from a single issue of a journal or one chapter from a book. See Copyright: licences & exceptions for more information.

Copyright declaration

Declaration to the University of Reading Librarian,

Please supply me with a copy of the item specified above which I require for the purposes of non-commercial research or private study. I also declare that:

a) I have not previously been supplied with a copy of the same material by any library,
b) I will not use the copy except for research for a non-commercial purpose or private study and will not supply the copy to any other person; and,
c) to the best of my knowledge no other person with whom I work or study has made or intends to make, at or about the same time as this request, a request for substantially the same material for substantially the same purpose.

I understand that if this declaration is false in any material particular, the copy supplied to me by you will be an infringing copy and that I shall be liable for the infringement of copyright as if I had made the copy myself.

I understand that to enable delivery my contact details may be passed to the supplying library.

Obtaining items for commercial research

If you cannot sign the copyright declaration it is necessary to charge you the full copyright fee in addition to the normal charges. Please contact inter-library loans if you are unable to sign the copyright declaration.

Commercial research should be understood as any research that is directly or indirectly income-generating. Your intention at the time must be unambiguously non-commercial if you are to avoid paying a copyright fee.
