Inter-library loan costs

You do not need to pay for the majority of your inter-library loan requests but we do charge for some additional services - please see below for details.

renewal of loans

If you require a renewal please Contact us a few days before your item is due - it isn't possible to renew online via your Library account. Renewals are at the discretion of the lending library so are not always possible. If you wish to renew a book after its due date has passed you will have to pay the overdue fine and the cost of the renewal.

Paying for inter-library loan charges

Charges will be added to your Library account - you may pay online via the Campus Card Portal, or by Credit/Debit card in person at the Welcome Desk on the Ground Floor of the Library or by calling (0118) 378 8770.

If you would like to pay using a University School / Department account, please Contact us with details of the University Project Code to use, e.g. A1234567

overdue fines and replacement costs

Type of charge 


 Fine for late returns 80p per day
 Long overdue items £89.60 + VAT (British Library levied administration fee)
 Lost items

If you fail to return an inter-library loan item, you will normally be charged the replacement cost of the item, but please note that the British Library charges a standard lost book rate in excess of £175

If you know you have lost your inter-library loan, please let us know as soon as possible.

  • One article -2 hour delivery by secure electronic delivery
  • One article -24 hour delivery by secure electronic delivery
  • Copyright Clearance Fee (if you need a copy of an article / book chapter and are unable to agree to the Copyright declaration)
