Children in the Library

If you bring your child into the Library you must accompany them at all times and you are responsible for their safety and behaviour. Children must not disturb other Library users. Library staff are not authorised or insured to look after any children brought onto the premises.

The Library rules (PDF) are extended to cover any child for whom an adult is responsible. A printed copy is available from the Welcome Desk. If these guidelines are breached in any way, you may be asked to leave the Library.

If you are not a member of the Library please note that during the University Examinations period (April until mid-June), access for non-Library members is restricted to weekends only and needs to be arranged in advance. See Information for members of the public for details of visiting restrictions and how to request access. Study spaces may not be used when visiting during this time as these are required by our own students revising for their exams.

The following access guidelines apply throughout the year.

Children under school age (under 5)

If you are accompanied by a child under the age of 5 you are able to use the Ground Floor of the Library only. You can:

  • ask for advice at the Welcome Desk or Study Advice and Maths Support Desk
  • renew or return books
  • collect holds
  • use the group study areas
  • visit the café.

If you need to collect an item from the upper floors please ask at the Welcome Desk and a member of staff will do this for you during staffed service opening hours.

School pupils (5-18 years)

School pupils aged 5–18 are allowed on all floors of the Library except the IT areas on the 1st Floor. Those under 18 must be accompanied by a parent, guardian or teacher at all times. They must not disturb other Library users.

We are currently unable to provide access to non-University members including local School/College pupils aged 18. This information will be updated once we are able to offer memberships again.

Currently enrolled University of Reading students aged 18 or below are exempted from this rule.
