Dr Ian Roe

I teach modules on the literature and culture of the 'Goethezeit' and of the nineteenth-century (in particular Austrian theatre and culture), and also courses on German grammar, syntax and structure.

My main research interests are C19 Austrian literature; learners' dictionaries and valency/grammar; analysis of learners' errors.

My publications include a book on Ferdinand Raimund (2010), and two books on Grillparzer: An introduction to the major works of Franz Grillparzer (1991) and Franz Grillparzer. A Century of Criticism (1995). I have written articles and essays on Goethe, Schnitzler, Brecht and Durrenmatt, as well as on many aspects of 19th century Austrian literature. I am one of the authors of A Valency Dictionary of English (2004), the first dictionary of its kind for the English Language, and I am currently working on a similar volume for English-speaking learners of German; I have also written articles on dictionaries, translation theory and valency grammar.

Postgraduate supervision

I am happy to supervise students working on nineteenth-century Austrian drama or on valency and lexicography.
