Summer in 2022

From June to August PSE 4 (11-weeks) and PSE 6 (6-weeks) will be offered.

What will I study in the summer PSE Programme (PSE 4 or PSE 6)?

There will be two main components to your Academic English studies in the summer PSE Programme at Reading:

Integrated Academic Language Skills

  • In this module, you will develop your confidence and proficiency in academic English communication, both receptive (listening, reading) and productive (speaking, writing).
  • You will practise academic language skills in an integrated way - meaning you will practise different skills in combination - which will directly prepare you for the challenges of your degree programme. In your degree programme, you will have to process ideas from your reading and lectures to communicate them in both written tasks and spoken presentations and discussions.
  • Learning will be interactive and task-based. Lessons will involve engaging interdisciplinary academic themes designed to replicate aspects of UK degree-programme study.

Academic Practices and Genres

  • Work on this module will develop your knowledge and understanding of UK academic culture enabling you to meet the expectations of your degree programme more successfully.
  • The module will focus on values such as academic integrity and associated academic practices such as appropriate use and citation of source texts.
  • You will also learn about the different types of assessed assignments - or academic 'genres' - that you will be required to write, such as essays, case studies and reflections. You will learn how to approach these genres effectively in terms of content, structure, and language.
  • By completing a Critical Review assignment, you will develop an awareness of the nature of research activity and the characteristics of research texts within your discipline.

How will I be assessed on the Summer PSE Programme (PSE 4 or PSE 6)?

  • Assessment will be via a combination of:
  • The Test of English for Educational Purposes (TEEP) will assess your proficiency in the four skills (reading, writing, listening and speaking)
  • Written-language and spoken-language coursework assignments, including the *Preparing for Research and Enquiry (PRE) assignment and a presentation.
  • *Undergraduate students will complete an equivalent written academic assignment appropriate for their level of study.

Will PSE 4 + 6 be taught face-to-face and online?

  • Yes.

Will I need a SELT to join PSE 4 + 6?

  • PSE 4 + 6 Online:
  • PSE 4 +6 Campus-based:
  • Yes. You will need a SELT to obtain a visa to enrol on a campus-based course.

How much are tuition fees for Pre-sessional English courses?

How do I pay tuition fees?

Are classes delivered at UK time?

  • Courses are mainly asynchronous (available to download at any time) to ensure that students in any time zone can access what is delivered unit by unit, with some live events every week that should be accessible to students in most time zones.

How will I be assessed?

  • Students will receive detailed individual feedback on both written and oral work and there will be continuous monitoring of their progress. The final assessment is based on a combination of continuous assessment and the Test of English for Educational Purposes (TEEP). The TEEP will be an online version.
