This project exploits archival and online information to compile an original dataset on EU legislation. Students will develop skills in web scraping, data management, coding of documents, and the use of Excel and Stata software.

This placement involves helping to create an original dataset of European Union legislative proposals. It improves upon existing datasets which are limited in their coverage and riddled with errors. The position would suit a student interested in the European Union, and keen to develop their skills in web scraping, data management, coding of historical documents, and the use of statistical software. The project is situated at the intersection of political science, law, and data science.
Web scraping, data entry and checking, manual coding of historical documents.
Experience with web scraping using Python and/or R is essential. Familiarity with Stata and Excel software would be useful but is not essential.
The student will develop their web scraping and data management skills, and also skills related to coding historical documents and the use of statistical software. They will also gain experience with the research process and of producing an academic publication.
The work can be done from home or on campus -- anywhere with a reliable internet connection.
