Responsibilities

As Technical Manager I head up a team of four technicians based in the Meteorology Department; School of Maths, Physics and Computation Sciences (SMPCS). The technical team provides support to two teaching laboratories, two research laboratories, two field courses, electronic and mechanical workshops and the Reading University Atmospheric Observatory.

In addition I provide specialist technical support in a range of disciplines including; data logging and field / laboratory instrumentation. I am also responsible for the Mechanical workshop in Meteorology where we have a lathes, milling, drilling and sawing machines and MMA/TIG welding equipment. With 25+ yrs experience in production engineering I provide full technical builds for our bespoke laboratory and field experiments, from the initial design through to final commissioning.

Career History:

I joined the University of Reading as a Trainee Technician in 1986 and have spent all my time within the Department of Meteorology. My formal training is in Mechanical and Production Engineering from Reading College of Technology but my expertise now spans a range of disciplines including, mechanical, electrical, electronic, instrumentation, 2D and 3D AutoCAD and Excel VBA programming .
