Vice-Chancellor recruitment - timeline and updates

Overview

This page brings together all the information and updates related to the appointment of a new Vice-Chancellor for the University.

A Selection Committee, reflecting different aspects of the University's activities, is overseeing the appointment. It includes:

  • four lay members of the Council,
  • two academic members - one nominated by Senate and one agreed by the Selection Committee itself to ensure a balance of background and skills with the Senate nominee;
  • the President of the Reading University Students' Union (RUSU).

The University Secretary and the Director of Human Resources attend the meetings of the Selection Committee to support and advise it.

An external agency, Odgers Berndtson UK, is assisting the Selection Committee with the recruitment - as is the standard practice for senior appointments across the sector. They spoke with a range of stakeholders to develop a thorough understanding of the University community and its needs.

Timeline for the recruitment

  • 25 September 2018: Selection Committee meets to agree recruitment materials
  • 28 November 2018: Selection Committee agrees a longlist of candidates
  • 24 January 2019: Selection Committee agrees a shortlist of candidates for interview.
  • 14 February 2019: Three separate panels of students, academic colleagues and professional/managerial colleagues interview shortlisted candidates.
  • 15 February 2019: Selection Committee interviews shortlisted candidates.
  • Early March 2019: University Council approves the appointment of a new Vice-Chancellor.
