LGBT+ Network: books, allies and marvellous managers
Monday, 29 June 2020
Our LGBT+ Staff Network have three updates they would like to share with you:
Join the LGBT+ Network Book Club!
Our LGBT+ Network invite you to join their new online book club. Who doesn't enjoy sinking into a good book and discussing it afterwards?
The club reads one book a month, selected at random from a list of recommended books that include LGBT+ representation. The book list is varied and features fiction, non-fiction, hot new releases, popular backlist titles and classics.
A new book will be selected at the start of each month, with discussion opening on the last Monday of the month, giving you plenty of time to read and make notes (you can join in the conversation any time you like though, so don't worry if you can't make that initial Monday discussion!).
The club is open to LGBT+ colleagues and PGR students, plus allies of the LGBT+ community. It is hosted by Gemma Fitz, Lead Ally of the LGBT+ Staff Network.
To join, please contact Gemma and she will add you to a dedicated group within the LGBT+ Network Teams channel. We encourage members of the book club to sign up to the wider LGBT+ Network on Teams, so if you're not already a member, please sign up today!
Become an LGBT+ Ally
If you'd like to become an ally of our LGBT+ community, we would love you to join us for an Ally Recruitment event on 1 July at 10:00.
The event will be held over Microsoft Teams, and is open to all colleagues and students who would like to become involved with the Network. To sign up please complete this short online form.
Managers - we need you
The LGBT + Network also encourages all line managers join the LGBT+ Network on Microsoft Teams.
The Network have recently launched a dedicated channel for managers within Teams that includes FAQs on how to be a good ally and supporter of LGBT+ team members. The Network would love to see managers share their stories, tips for best practice and activity ideas, so please sign up if you're not already a member.
Having someone at the top show genuine commitment and care can make such a different to someone who is struggling against prejudice in one form or other, so your input will be invaluable.
