Digital Accessibility webinars this week
Monday, 18 May 2020
In anticipation of Global Accessibility Awareness Day on 21 May 2020, we will be holding a series of webinars focusing on digital accessibility throughout the week.
From effective design to assistive technology, each webinar aims to improve your understanding of digital accessibility. Places can be booked via UoRLearn - all are welcome.
The four webinars are:
Inclusive Design
60 minutes
Find out how you can use accessibility tools in Microsoft Word & PowerPoint and the principles of inclusive design. You will also have the opportunity to explore the Blackboard Ally tool which provides alternative formats of documents for students.
Web Accessibility Regulations
30 minutes
The EU Accessibility Directive became part of UK law in 2018 and has created a new set of digital accessibility requirements for public sector organisations, including universities and other HE providers. These apply to websites, apps and all aspects of the digital experience for students and other service users, such as Virtual Learning Environments.
Here, you will learn about the definition of ‘digital accessibility', regulation timelines, and what we are doing to comply with the regulations.
Introduction to Assistive Technology
30 minutes
In this session, participants learn how to use the built-in accessibility technology in their mobile devices, such as screen readers, as well as introduction and examples of available screen readers for Windows and Mac OS devices. We will also demonstrate some accessibility features of MS Office products.
Introduction to Web Accessibility Testing
60 minutes
In this course, we will introduce free web accessibility tools and basic manual tests. No previous accessibility and technical knowledge are required for this webinar.
All four webinars will take place every day, between now and Thursday.

Global Accessibility Awareness Day
Global Accessibility Awareness Day takes places each year on the third Thursday of May - this year, it falls on Thursday 21 May.
It aims to raise awareness of digital access and inclusion. Over one billion people around the world have disabilities and impairments, but even in this day and age, many producers of content are not fully aware of the barriers that can be encountered in accessing content with ease.
