Below is a Message from Vice-Chancellor Robert Van de Noort to the Nanjing University of Information, Science and Technology (NUIST).

Dear President Li,

I am writing to send my warm congratulations on the 60th anniversary of the Nanjing University of Information, Science and Technology. I am sorry I cannot be there in person, but am pleased to be able to join in the celebrations taking place around the world.

The COVID-19 pandemic has created huge challenges across the world, and it is apt that NUIST is overcoming this challenge by using technology and holding your anniversary celebrations online. This reflects the way the University has always innovated to find solutions, and built an excellent global reputation.

The global nature of our lives and work is epitomised by our responses to COVID-19. The solidarity and the resilience demonstrated by our respective communities during this crisis shows how important it is to continue to work together to tackle major global problems.

The development of NUIST over the last 60 years matches the success story of growth across China, as both have become world leaders in education and technology. We are particularly proud that NUIST has become known as a hub of talent for meteorology and environmental science, something that Reading is also known for.

The University of Reading is proud to be a close strategic partner of NUIST. As our two universities complete a decade of collaboration, we look forward to working together for many years to come to tackle climate and environmental issues and create a better future for everyone.

Impressive progress has been made at NUIST in recent years. It has been elevated to Double First Class initiative and a Jiangsu high-level university. The NUIST Reading Academy, which we jointly established in 2015, is now rated Excellent by the Ministry of Education. We send our huge congratulations on these achievements.

And the future is bright too. We are excited that the NUIST Reading Academy is expanding to include postgraduate programmes and research collaborations. This new era will allow us to work together in even more ways to make a positive difference to people’s lives in China, in the UK, and around the world.

Congratulations once again, and I look forward to joining you to celebrate in the autumn.

Very best wishes

Professor Robert Van de Noort

Vice Chancellor, University of Reading
