Use Campus Card to access Library from 22 October
Friday, 19 October 2018
From Monday 22 October, colleagues will need to use their Campus Card to access the Library.
New access gates, installed as part of the Library Refurbishment Project, will become operational that day. This will help us prioritise the study space for University members and offer increased security.
The change does not affect access to the Library café or the toilets on the ground floor, which will be accessible as normal.
To enter or leave the Library, tap your Campus Card on the new access gates. Access should already be set up on your card, as it is required to use the Library@URS overnight, at weekends and during the revision period when we restrict access to Library study space.
In case of a problem, please see staff on duty at the Help Point (to the left of the gates) who will be happy to help.
Library refurbishment
The Library is undergoing a £40m redevelopment and refurbishment, which will:
- increase the study seating capacity.
- create a more comfortable and sustainable study environment by replacing heating and ventilation systems, windows, cladding and roofing.
- aim to cut energy use by 40% and reduce carbon emissions by 30%.
- provide bigger lifts with better access for wheelchair users.
- offer automated returned-book sorter.
In September 2018, parts of the ground and first floors in the Library were reopened for use. This includes a brand new café, which offers hot drinks and a ‘grab and go’ menu – including sandwiches, fresh soup and toasties. Two Freestyle machines offer water and a range of soft drinks.
The ground floor offers other study seating options, while the first floor offers a range of group study seating options. Students are welcome to use these study spaces (no food in these areas please!), but please bear in mind that Library refurbishment continues on these and other floors until autumn 2019 and it will sometimes be noisy or disruptive.
Therefore, the study space and services arrangements in Library@URS will remain in place for the whole of the academic year 2018/2019. Library@URS provides a quieter environment for study while still being close enough to borrow and use the Library's printed materials.
