National Pay Bargaining 2017-18: message from John Brady

University shield

Discussions in respect of the 2017-18 pay award have been proceeding via the Joint Negotiating Committee for Higher Education Staff  (JNCHES).

Three meetings have been held to date. At the last scheduled meeting on 27 April 2017 the employers’ side made a final offer of a base pay uplift of 1.7% on all pay spine points from 1 August 2017. In responding to the trade union side request to address increases towards the lower paid, the offer also provides for higher increases up to point 16 on the pay spine – by way of example point 2 would be uplifted by 2.43%.

The trade unions noted at the final negotiating meeting that the outcome reached is the best that could be achieved through negotiations, and all have undertaken to consult their members on the final offer. None of the unions expect to conclude their member consultations before late June or early July.

I will provide further information in respect of the pay round discussions as and when it becomes available.

Please feel free to contact me on if you have any questions.
