Emeritus Professor Martin Upton, VEERU, School of Agriculture, Policy & Development

The Agricultural Economic Society recently awarded Emeritus Professor Martin Upton for his Excellent Outstanding Contribution to Lifetime Research, Teaching and Learning.

Professor Upton is an Associate and Livestock Economist in the University's Veterinary Epidemiology and Economics Research Unit (VEERU).

He has more than 40 years experience in studying, researching, teaching and promoting agricultural production economics. 

He has written 5 books on different aspects of Farm Management and Production Economics, and has taught these subjects at the Universities of Ibadan, Nigeria, and Reading.

Professor Upton's recent activities have included assisting Defra to develop an economic framework for developing and appraising their animal health & welfare policy, advising the Government of Malta on their accession to the European Union and on economic policy issues relating to their livestock sector as well as contributing to a cost benefit analysis of Foot and Mouth Disease control options for Defra.
