Professorial Annual Review 2021

The Annual Review will take a different format this year.  As the 2020 Review was unavoidably postponed, it has been decided that the 2020 and 2021 Annual Review processes will be combined to ensure that cases are properly and fully considered.  All cases that were submitted last year will be considered together with this years’ cases and any salary or zone adjustments arising will be given effect retrospectively, as appropriate.

You will not be required to complete the on-line form this year.  Instead, you should submit a statement, of no more than two sides of A4, describing your activities and achievements for the previous year. However, if you are seeking advancement to a higher zone you will also need to provide your publications list for 2020 and your CV.

All professorial colleagues are required to submit a statement, setting out their activities and achievements for the 12-month period up to 31 December 2020. Failure to submit a statement will only be accepted in exceptional circumstances and must be agreed with your Head of School.  The statement must be submitted to your Head of School no later than 5pm on Monday 1 February 2021.  

Here are some key points to be aware of:

  • You may only submit a statement in respect of your activities and achievements over the past 12 months.  If you did not complete the form for the 2020 Annual Review, you will not be given the opportunity to do so now. 
  • There are no automatic increments or progression within or between the zones: these are awarded on the basis of exceptional performance against the relevant zone criteria.  
  • There should be no expectation that colleagues will receive an award each year.  
  • You must make a submission for advancement to Zone 2 if you have been in Zone 1 for 4 or more years.  Applications for advancement must provide evidence across the range of the criteria for Zone 2, demonstrating continued development and achievement since appointment, or promotion, linking to PDR discussions and any objectives set therein where appropriate. 
  • Earlier progression to Zone 2 is possible in exceptional cases.  

All submissions will be reviewed by an Advisory Group which will consult internally and externally, as appropriate. The process is subject to scrutiny by a lay member of Council, who will attend at least one meeting of the Advisory Group.  

The Advisory Group will report its recommendations to the Remuneration Committee, who will consider the recommendations, being mindful of equality issues and the University’s overall financial position.

Formal outcomes will be notified by the Director of Human Resources.  Any salary or zone adjustments arising will be given effect retrospectively, as appropriate.  Requests for feedback should be addressed to your Head of School in the first instance.
