Approval of post
It is important to ensure that sufficient funding, whether externally sourced or otherwise, is available prior to initiating the recruitment process. Posts are approved through the completion of a Staffing Request Form.
Staffing request forms
There are four types of staffing requests:
- Filling a new post
- Filling a vacant post (including temporary cover)
- Extensions and/or amendments to contracts
- Creating/filling a sessional post
These staffing requests can be made via the online HR Approval portal whereby you can submit a request and it will follow a pre-programmed workflow. This ensures that the correct authorisation is obtained and that the HR Department is notified when the request is approved.

Grades and on-costs
In all employment situations there are additional costs incurred over and above what the employee receives. For example when an employee is a member of either USS or UEPF the employer makes the following contribution:
- USS - 18%
- UREPF - 20%
- URPS - 5%
Employers are also liable for employer's National Insurance.
