Postgraduate supervision

Dr Tallett would be pleased to supervise research students with an interest either in European military history in the early modern period or in the history of French Catholicism between circa 1650 and 1914.

Teaching

Dr Tallett contributes to the Department's Part I course on Landmarks in European History, 1066-1945 and Approaches to History (see details above).He also teach two option courses for parts II and III of the undergraduate degree, on The French Revolution and Religion and Society in France from 1750 to 1914. Additionally, he teaches a survey course, Change and Stability in Europe of the Old Regime. He also contributes to the teaching of the BA in European Studies.

With respect to the Department of History's two taught postgraduate programmes, Dr Tallett teaches on the core module, Historical Skills and Resources, as well as offering two optional modules, European Warfare from the Sixteenth to the Twentieth Century: Conduct and Consequences and Church and State in France, 1780-1945. He also teaches a module on The Origins of the French Revolution for the MA in Franco-British History which is offered by the Centre for the Advanced Study of French History.

Research projects

Dr Tallett's research interests lie in the twin fields of European military and religious history in the period from the late seventeenth to the early twentieth, with particular emphasis on the religious history of France under the old regime and during the Revolution.

Background

Dr Tallett is Head of the School of Humanities, which comprises the departments of History, History of Art, Classics and Philosophy. He is co-Director (with Professor Joël Félix) of the inter-Departmental Centre for the Advanced Study of French History, and Director of its MA in Franco-British History. He is a Fellow of the Royal Historical Society, and has served as an External Examiner at a number of Universities.
