Use of Ionising radiation in research

INTRODUCTION:

This course is designed to introduce new users of open sources of radioactive materials to the concept of hazards and risks posed by radioactive materials and the general principles of radiation safety.

Attendance is mandatory for all new users of open sources: permission to start open-source work will only be granted after production of an Attendance Certificate or equivalent proof of training.

AIM:

To introduce new users of open sources of radioactive materials to the concept of hazards and risks posed by radioactive materials and the general principles of radiation safety.

OBJECTIVES ON RETURNING TO THE WORK PLACE YOU WILL BE ABLE TO:

  • Understand the basis concepts of generation of ionising radiation and radioactive isotopes
  • Understand the risks associated with the use of radioactive materials
  • Have a basic understanding of the law relating to the use of Open Sources of radioactive materials
  • Know the University procedures for Open Source use

COURSE CONTENT:

  • Fundamentals of Radioactivity
  • Radiation dose, and effects on the body
  • The concept of 'ALARP'
  • Risk assessment and Local Rules
  • University procedures for acquiring, storing, using and disposing of open sources of radioactive materials.
  • Monitoring

WHO SHOULD ATTEND:

All new postgraduates and staff likely to be engaged in work with open sources of radioactive materials, or who have already started such work but have not previously attended a training session on this topic.
