A safety audit is a structured process where information is collected relating to the suitability and performance of the overall health and safety management system of the university.
Safety audits serve two broad purposes:
1) They are routinely conducted in order to determine whether there is compliance with safety legislation.
2) They are used to identify weaknesses in safety programs and processes, which leads to the development of corrective actions.
In addition to ensuring legislative compliance, safety audits review the universities safety documentation and determine whether their record-keeping systems are adequate or need to be more robust. They will also look beyond the current activity in the workplace and evaluate the universities safety training.
A safety audit will involve a walk-through of the facility, interviewing staff and students, and reviewing relevant documentation.
