Pan-African Heatwave Health Hazard Forecasting (PAHF).
My Research is an interdisciplinary project that explores the UTCI- a biometerological heat stress index-, temperature and relative humidity of heatwaves across the Continent of Africa. It also looks at the perceptions of heat from different sectors with a focus on Ghana. This is very important research as heatwaves have not had a lot of previous research and present an increasing risk to Africa, especially for livelihoods as well as, health.
The project is part funded by the University of Reading Graduate School through a Regional Bursary and the SCENARIO DTP in Partnership with ECMWF and is supported by the Walker Institute and Evidence for Development.
I have a 2:1 in a Joint Honours BSc in Computer Science and Physical Geography from Aberystwyth University and an MSc (with a Merit) in Climate Change: Environment, Science and Policy from King's College London. My BSc project focused on machine learning applications to weather data. My MSc project was working with the Green Sahara team at KCL, focusing on hydrological and cultural changes over the Holocene in Northern Africa, with a specific focus on the Holocene Climate Optimum, using Singular Spectrum Analysis, I received a Distinction for this work. I am interested in Science Communication and Science's role in policymaking. Since starting my PhD I have helped out at academic project conferences and am taking part in Outreach events, for example organising Planet Earth and Creative Reactions for Pint of Science: 2020. I also have been demonstrating on a range of modules in the Department and have assisted with module marking.
