Key Facts:

Hong Yang joined the department in 2017 as an environmental scientist. Prior to this appointment he worked as a postdoctoral research fellow and a researcher in Southampton, UK and Oslo, Norway.

Hong has a BSc in Geography from Central China Normal University and an MSc in Physical Geography from Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) where he researched the greenhouse gas (CO2, CH4, N2O) emission and carbon cycle in lakes along middle and lower reached of Yangtze River. Hong then came to University College London (UCL) to pursue a PhD in Environmental Change. Funded by NERC DHPA scholarship, Hong researched the acidification and carbon cycle in upland Scottish lochs using bio-proxy (diatom) and water chemistry.

Hong has led and been involved in research projects funded by UK Natural Environment Research Council (NERC), Scottish Natural Heritage (SNH), European Research Council (ERC) FP6, Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, Research Council of Norway (RCN), Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) and Chinese Natural Science Foundation (CNSF). In recent years, Hong has become increasingly interested in the complex interplay between water, land use, energy development, agriculture, and climate change. This has led to fruitful, inter-disciplinary collaboration on water-energy-food-carbon nexus across the world - in the UK, USA, Norway, China, South Africa, and Kenya.

Hong is an academic editor of PeerJ Environmental Science

Further Information

Hong is always looking for enthusiastic and professionally curious PhD students with an academic background on biogeochemistry, RS, GIS, or modelling. If you are interested in areas mentioned above, please contact him.

If you have a PhD and are interested in academic visit or postdoctoral fellowship, Hong is also happy to discuss and assist with the application.
