FSA Local Authority Letter (FSAEN24002), 8 February 2024

OFFICIAL CONTROLS / ADMINISTRATION - Letter to local authority Chief Executives regarding budget setting for statutory food & feed services

Summary: Emily Miles, Chief Executive of the Food Standards Agency, has written to local authority Chief Executives to highlight the importance of ensuring that teams are appropriately resourced to deliver statutory food and feed functions.

As you may already be aware, a paper on local authority (LA) performance was presented to the Food Standards Agency (FSA) Board at their meeting in December 2023.

One of the recommendations in the paper was for the FSA to write to all local authority Chief Executives. The purpose of writing was to set out the Board’s concerns about LA resources, and to remind them of the statutory nature of official food/feed controls as they consider and set budgets for next financial year. There was a request that the letter was shared with Section 151 Finance Officers, council leaders and relevant elected portfolio holders. In her letter, Emily also recognised the hard work that you and your colleagues undertake.

I wanted to make you aware that the letter was issued on Friday 26 January
