COMPOSITIONAL STANDARDS – European Parliament considers draft report on the Breakfast Directives

Today ENVI will discuss the draft report on the proposal for a revision of four of the so called “Breakfast Directives", a set of Directives that lay down common rules on the composition, sales name, labelling and presentation of certain foodstuffs.

The Commission proposal aims to harmonise marketing standards to facilitate the uptake and supply of sustainable products and seeks ways to contribute to healthy diets and more transparency on the composition and origin of food products, with a view to address the challenges of sustainable food systems in line with the EU Green Deal and the 'Farm to Fork' Strategy.

In the draft report, the Rapporteur proposes a more ambitious approach regarding the labelling of honey, taking into account practical needs of honey producers, packers and other industries. The Rapporteur also suggests that sugar-reduced juices should not be advertised as products with greater health benefits than regular juices containing only natural sugar.
