Summary: To aid in the development of compliant new materials from biological resources (Bio-based) for food contact purposes the Agency has published a Guide on its website.

The Food Standards Agency has recently published a new guide on bio-based food contact materials which you may find useful.

The Bio-based Guide is intended to help developers and manufacturers identify and consider aspects of regulatory compliance that might influence their material choices, in order to meet customer needs for the intended use of the end product. The guide is designed to assist in the initial development of new materials with a series of questions that may need to be addressed to achieve ultimate compliance. The guide will prompt the reader to consider avenues of compliance they may not be aware of but will not give actual guidance as to how that compliance is to be achieved.

Attaining compliance for the materials used will be based on existing guidance across government websites, industry guidance and local resources. It is hoped this new provide flexibility in a rapidly evolving legislative landscape.

We envisage this to be of value should new initiatives come to your notice in this field, or new materials are encountered with compliance aspects that may not be readily apparent.
