The Codex Secretariat has published the 28th edition of the Codex Alimentarius Procedural Manual on its website. This release not only incorporates the recent technical additions agreed by the Commission but presents the content in a new format and design in line with the Codex 60th anniversary overall rebranding of Codex texts, as well as with FAO and industry publishing standards.

“The 28th edition of the Procedural Manual, with its new format and colourful layout, is a dazzling piece of work that represents undoubtedly a milestone in the history of the Manual,“ said Jean-Luc Angot, France, Chairperson of the Codex Committee on General Principles (CCGP). With improvement in terms of clarity and ease of reading, “the alignment to state-of-the-art publication standards also brings exciting perspectives for CCGP and the whole Codex family as it will facilitate future updates, ensure long-term consistency and enable compatibility to modern reference management tools,” he said.

“It’s great to see this 28th edition of the Codex Procedural Manual, now available as an online and downloadable version,” said Steve Wearne, United Kingdom, Chairperson of the Codex Alimentarius Commission.  Codex Members agree additions and changes to the manual more or less every year, and so it’s important to keep it up to date.  “And so the new foreword, which highlights what’s new in this edition, is particularly helpful,” he said.

Major changes are: amendments to the section on commodity standards dealing with non-retail containers; text on committees working by correspondence, and a new annex on extrapolation of maximum residue limits of veterinary drugs.

This English version will shortly be followed by French and Spanish and it is hoped by the end of 2023 Arabic, Chinese and Russian.

In the words of Jean-Luc Angot: “An important step forward and a great gift for the 60th anniversary of the Codex Alimentarius Commission!”
