NOVEL FOODS - Register of novel food authorisations for Great Britain

Summary: The Food Standards Agency (FSA) alongside the Food Standards Scotland (FSS) have published a register of novel food authorisations on the FSA website.

The FSA alongside the FSS have introduced a new register of authorised novel foods in Great Britain (GB).

Novel foods are foods which have not been used for human consumption to a significant degree within the UK or European Union (EU) before 15 May 1997. Novel foods need to be authorised before they can be placed on the market in GB.

This online register will provide a more accessible and user-friendly means of searching for authorised novel foods that are permitted for use in GB and provides details on the: conditions of use, labelling requirements, date of authorisation and other specific legislation. A link to the register’s guidance notes can be accessed on the register webpage.

The register is for information only and does not replace the list of authorised novel foods (retained EU regulation 2017/2470) and subsequent amendments to the list, which are the legal basis for placing on the market and use of novel foods.

Any novel foods that were authorised prior to the end of the EU exit transitional period (31 December 2020) are retained in GB law and are included in the register, along with subsequent novel foods authorisations applicable to GB only.

EU Food Law continues to apply in Northern Ireland, under the current terms of the Northern Ireland Protocol. The novel status of a product in Northern Ireland is based on the European Commission determination and before being placed on the Northern Ireland market, novel foods must go through the EU authorisation processes. Only novel foods authorised by the European Commission may be placed on the Northern Ireland market.

The FSA will continue to update LAs on newly authorised novel foods or when amendments are made to existing products. The Novel Foods Register will be updated regularly to reflect any changes.
