Event Information
The University of Reading Chemistry Department are delighted to invite students to take part in our Spectroscopy Masterclass, a hands-on learning experience designed to enhance students understanding of modern analytical chemistry.
This event will run on four dates this year, due to its popularity last year!
3rd and 5th November 2026 and 23rd and 24th March 2027.
During the masterclass, students will be introduced to a range of essential spectroscopic techniques, including infrared (IR) spectroscopy, mass spectrometry, and both ¹H and ¹³C nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR).
Participants will not only learn the underlying principles of these methods but will also gain valuable practical experience in our teaching laboratories, using the instrumentation and working with genuine data sets.
The session is designed to bridge classroom learning and real-world application, demonstrating how professional chemists use these tools to solve problems on a day-to-day basis. It’s an ideal opportunity for students interested in the chemical sciences and related fields to deepen their understanding and see what studying chemistry at university is really like.
For teachers: The content of the masterclass aligns closely with the A-level Chemistry specification, particularly the analytical techniques section (IR, mass spectrometry and NMR). These topics are frequently identified as challenging areas for students; our session provides them with rare, hands-on experience and expert guidance to reinforce and contextualise their classroom learning.
