More than words: the power of language to divide and unite
We’re told words are just words. But words can inspire, unite and empower. They can also stigmatise, exclude and harm.
In recent years, racist, anti-LGBTI+ and other forms of hate speech have become increasingly present in public debate and online spaces. Yet it is not always easy to recognise, hiding in jokes, stereotypes and everyday phrases that draw lines between “us” and “them”.
Drawing on real-world examples, this talk by Professor Federico Faloppa examines how hate speech works, why it is so pervasive, and what consequences it can have for individuals, communities and democratic societies.
At the same time, Professor Faloppa will explore how language can be used differently: not to divide, but to create understanding, respect and belonging, and what each of us can do to bring people closer together.
About the speaker
Professor Federico Faloppa is a linguist at the University of Reading and one of Europe's leading experts on hate speech. For more than twenty years, his research has examined how language shapes power relations, how minorities are represented in the media, and how racist and discriminatory discourses emerge and spread. He serves as an expert on preventing and addressing hate speech for the Council of Europe, is Scientific Director of the Italian National Network to Combat Hate Speech and works with international institutions, NGOs, and local municipalities to translate research into practical strategies for tackling discrimination and promoting social inclusion.
This event will be held in person and livestreamed on the University's YouTube channel, enabling remote participation for those unable to attend in person.
Please note: Admission is free, but booking is mandatory.
