Michael Schmitt is a Professor of International Law at the University of Reading, the G. Norman Lieber Distinguished Scholar at the U.S. Military Academy (West Point), and the Charles H. Stockton Distinguished Scholar-in-Residence at the U.S. Naval War College. This lecture will examine key legal issues that have surfaced during the armed conflict between Israel and Hamas, as well as other armed groups. These include the legal basis for the Israeli response to Hamas’ October 7 and the international humanitarian law governing the hostilities that followed.
