Event Information

Join us online on Tuesday 28th November, 12-1pm or 6-7pm for an introduction to school governance. In partnership with Governors for Schools, the webinar will share what is involved in being a school governor, how you can share your skills and the benefits you can gain. You will also be able to hear from staff and alumni about their experience of being a school governor. Effective school governance helps to ensure excellent education for children in schools. Volunteering as a school governor is a fantastic way to broaden your skills and network, build up board level experience and help set the strategic direction of a school. The strength of a governance board is the diversity of skills, experiences and perspectives. School governance can be open to everyone and we will be helping to 'myth bust' some common views such as needing senior level experience or working within education. You might also be surprised to find out that the time commitment can be relatively low, enabling you to fit this around a full time job, degree or family life. University of Reading staff, depending on the demands of the role, are also entitled to special leave of up to 10 days with pay to carry out school governance duties. These webinars are aimed at alumni, students and staff but anyone is welcome to join.
