BA Education Studies Annual Lecture on Climate Change

The annual lecture for 2023 will focus on Climate Change and Education. Our first guest, Keith Shine is Regius Professor of Meteorology and Climate Science, UoR, and will discuss: Climate Change: An incomplete briefing (3:30-4:10) Now that the Sixth Assessment Report of the UN’s Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change is complete, this talk will review our current understanding of climate change – what we know and what we are not yet certain about – and how this links to the UN’s Framework Convention on Climate Change, which is where policy making takes place. The talk will particularly stress the way carbon dioxide emissions, as a result of human activity, persist for centuries to millennium. This will then link to the concept of "net zero" emissions of carbon dioxide, which is needed if we are to limit human-induced global warming below a given level. Climate change impinges on many aspects of the curriculum, including understanding how climate change occurs, its impacts and how society responds to it”. Our second guest, Dr Jo Anna Reed Johnson, is one of the Directors for Climate and Sustainable Education at the IoE, UoR, and will follow up professor Shine’s talk with a specific focus on: The role of Education in understanding Climate Change ¬(4.15pm-4:30pm) This talk will focus on the importance of climate education in building an understanding of climate change. It will provide an overview of the macro, micro and miso reasons of its’ broad ranging implementation. This will be achieved by exploring some of the outcomes of COP 26/27 UN Directive, UK/England Policy for Climate Education, and educational organisation level requirements. This will then link to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and how by focusing on them helps to drive change. Panel Discussion (4:30-5:00pm) The talks will be followed by a panel discussion. The panel will be consisted of Professor Keith Shine, Dr Jo Anna Reed Johnson and Dr Nasreen Majid (Directors for Climate and Sustainable Education at the IoE) joined by the IoE student partners who will collect questions from students and chair the panel discussion. The panel will receive questions from the audience (prior to and during the discussion).
