The Project Department

The project department is one team comprising 21 fulltime staff that provide a project management service for all projects ranging from several thousand pounds through to major capital projects and campus wide master planning.

The main work for the department is the delivery of the University's strategy of consolidation of academic activities and restructuring activities into the academic zones within the overarching Master Plan.

The Projects Department is currently working on a Residential Programme of £100m and a non-residential major capital programme of £116.5m along with £6m per annum of small works and some investment projects.

This delivery is enhanced by grouping the department into three basic sections, Capital Projects, Small Works and Strategic Project Development, so that focus can be given to particular areas of expertise within the team in order that each project can be delivered in the most efficient manner using the correct procedure based on a project's cost, programme, risk, complexity, extent of stakeholder interfaces.

The work is intense and its demand on resource goes beyond the capacity of our full time staff so the project management activity is supplemented with consultant project managers who report into our own project managers who manage a portfolio of projects.

The Capital Projects Team

We work with external consultants, advisers, statutory authorities, and specialist internal departments.  Projects currently being managed range from approximately £1 million to £20 million.

The Small Works Projects Team

We achieve the projects' objectives, to agreed quality, time and cost by careful planning, monitoring. Projects range from just a few hundred pounds to approximately £1 million.

Strategic Project Development

Working along side the Projects Management Team, this unit interfaces between the very early stages of estate strategy and the practical delivery of projects.

Data Voice and Networks

We deal with all data and telephone cabling matters throughout the University ranging from a single network port to major installations of fibre optic and copper cables
