Finance and funding

Your money matters - everything you need to know about student loans, paying your fees and working part-time alongside your degree.

If your fees are self funded, please remember that 50% of your tuition fees will need to be paid before you can complete the enrolment process. You can find more details in our Tuition Fee Rates.

We no longer accept cash for paying fees. All tuition and accommodation payments must now be paid online. Read more about how and where to pay your fees.

Please note: All members of the student Financial Support team are working remotely. To contact the team students should send an email to studentfunding@reading.ac.uk and a member of the team will respond to the email or if needed can arrange to call the student to discuss the issues raised. From 1 September the Financial Support team will be back in the office with a booking platform for online chats. More details will be added shortly.

Help with budgeting

It's important to factor in day-to-day expenses such as transport and food shopping. You should plan ahead and budget appropriately for these costs. If you would like advice on budgeting, there are a variety of resources and services that can help:

  • Contact the Student Financial Support Team at studentfunding@reading.ac.uk or by calling 0118 378 5555 for advice on money health checks.

    Bursaries and awards

Find out about the extra financial support you could receive in the form of Bursaries and Awards on the Money Matters webpages.

Extra costs to bear in mind

Your fees cover a wide range of the services and support that the University provides for you. However, there are some additional costs that you may encounter during your time at Reading that aren't covered by your fees. This could include field trips, textbooks or stationery.

Research undertaken by the Students' Union has identified these costs as being around £200 per year, but this can vary between subject areas. Welcome Week events, socialising, and student societies will also have their associated costs, so it's good to bear these in mind. More specific information about extra course costs can be given by your department or school.

    Fees and enrolment

If your tuition fees are being paid by the Student Finance Authorities you will be asked to confirm this when you start online enrolment.

If you are being funded by a sponsor, private company or your government (excluding Student Finance England, Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales), you will need to ask them to provide a letter confirming this which you will need to present during enrolment week.

If you are self-funding your fees, 50% of your tuition fees will need to be paid before you can complete enrolment onto your course. The remaining balance will be payable at the start of the Spring term. Please see the Tuition Fee Policy for details.

You can find out more about extra sources of funding available on our Money Matters pages, as well as information on our Reading Bursary Scheme.

    Paying your fees

You can pay your fees online. This will allow your payment to be automatically allocated to your student account and you will receive a receipt straight away. If you are unable to pay your fees online, please read the following guide for other ways to pay.

Please note: The University will not accept any cash payment for fees.

    Student loans

If you are looking for financial support while you study and to help pay your course fees, you can apply for student finance.

Applications will need to be approved by your parents/guardians/partner and include your household income assessment which will allow the University to assess your eligibility for a bursary.
