Other support services | Disability Advisory Service

In addition to the Disability Advisory Service, there are many other places to get help and support whilst at University of Reading.

In addition to the Disability Advisory Service, there are a number of other places to go to help and support you while at University in Reading.

There are disability representatives in each school. Please ask at your Support Centre to find out who is responsible for your department.

Independent living/personal care at university (accessing Social Services)

Students who require daily personal care or assistance to live independently and who are based in the UK, should contact the Social Services team from their local authority to discuss the options available to them.  It is likely that your Social Services team will carry out an assessment of your care needs.

Study advisers and maths support team

The Study Advice and Maths Support services are available to all students and can help with common study problems such as essay writing, exam preparation and mathematical difficulties. They work with individuals and groups of students to improve academic development. Student-friendly guides, video tutorials and worksheets are available on the Study Advice and Maths Support websites.

Careers advisers This team will be able to assist you with selecting a career or employment after graduation from University. They may be able to help you get work experience whilst you are studying and they will help with CVs and job applications. Careers also offer access to further employability support.

Counselling Service

This service comprises psychologists, psychotherapists or counsellors who can help with the social, relationship and emotional problems which can arise while at university, in a confidential setting. They are also able to offer specialist help with social skills, and ongoing support for students with more complex difficulties. Students’ Union advice centre (Reading Students' Union) 

Reading Students' Union can give advice on general student matters including what benefits you may be entitled to claim.

GPs and medical practices

If you have a significant on-going medical condition, it is advised that you make contact with a practice before starting university, to ensure continuity of care. There are medical practices around the University where you can register.
  • The University Medical Centre - there is a physiotherapy service and a visiting Consultant Psychiatrist. There is also an attached dental surgery.
