Laptop Loan Service

You can now borrow laptops from the Library on short-term loan for up to 8 hours.

Laptops can be loaned during the Library’s opening hours

Access the laptops from secure locker bays on the first, second and third floors of the library.

The IT Service Desk located on the first floor of the library is available for any problems with your loan.

    How can I borrow a laptop

    -  Laptop loan devices (excluding power supply) are available for a short term loan period of 8 hours

    -  You must be a current student with a valid ID card

    -  Present your Campus Card to the card reader on a secure locker through following instructions on the locker’s console screen

    How do I use a loan laptop?

    -  Laptops must be disconnected from the locker bay power supply before removing

    -  The loan laptops are all Microsoft and installed with Windows 10 and Office 365

    -  You can launch software from Appsanywhere as required

    -  Your user data and user credentials are cleared from the device as you return the laptop, therefore make sure you upload your data to OneDrive before the end of your session.

    How can I get support with a loan laptop?

    During office hours a member of the DTS Service Desk on the first floor of the library will be able to offer assistance in the event of an issue arising with loaning or returning a laptop.

    Opening hours:

    08:00 - 17:00 Monday to Friday

    09:00 - 17:00 on weekends

    How do I return a laptop?

    -   Return the loaned laptop to the same secure locker you loaned it from

    -  Follow the on screen instructions on the secure locker console to make a return verifying the return with your campus card

    -  Make sure you reconnect the laptop to its power supply before closing the secure bay door

    -  The loan is not complete until the power supply is connected and the secure bay door has been locked  

    What are the terms of the loan?

    Terms & Conditions for all students using the laptop loan service 

    -  You must be a current student with a valid ID card 

    -  Ensure you return the laptop at the end of the loan period - If you fail to return the laptop within the authorised loan period you will be subject to a late return fine of £5 per day for the first 10 days it is overdue 

    -  The laptop must be returned in good condition- Should any damage occur, you must report asap, and you may be liable for the cost of repair

    -  University of Reading is not responsible for any damage to the borrower’s data storage device(s), loss of data caused by software, hardware, battery failure or computer viruses. 

    -  If the laptop is lost or stolen in your care, you must report this to UoR DTS (contact details), and may be required to supply a police crime reference number where appropriate.
