Results publication and next steps
Results will be published on different dates depending on your level of study. If after results publication you believe that your performance in your centrally timetabled examinations has been affected by an extenuating circumstance in the summer term, you will have five working days to use the Post-results Extenuating Circumstances process to request to take the examination again.
If you are not clear what your results mean you should speak with the named contact in your School/Department. They can help guide you and discuss what you can do if you have any concerns about your results.
For any students who were granted to be ‘Deemed Not to Have Sat’ (DNS) in their examinations prior to the exam period but subsequently chose to take their exams then please note the marks from that exam will be included in your overall results calculation.
Results Publication Dates:
Finalists (undergraduate and taught postgraduate) (excluding BA Children's Development and Learning, and PGCEs)
Provisional results for undergraduate finalists and postgraduate taught finalists will be made available on the RISIS Portal on 23 June 2021 by 3pm. The final confirmed results will be made available on the RISIS Portal on 9 July 2021 by 12 noon.
Undergraduate – parts 0, 1 and 2 (excluding Part 1 and Part 2 BA(Ed), NUIST Part 0,1 and 2, and International Foundation Programme (January cohort))
For Parts 0, 1 and 2; students will receive an email with their results. Students will also be able to view their results on the RISIS Portal. The dates these will be published on are as follows:
Part 0 – 5 July by 3pm
Part 1 – 5 July by 3pm
Part 2, 2Z and Part 3 Integrated Masters – 6 July by 3pm
Postgraduate – non-finalists (those continuing to study in 2021/22) and PhD students taking postgraduate modules
Students on postgraduate taught programmes who are continuing to study in 2021/22 will receive an email on the 2 July 2021 confirming that their finalised marks are available to view on the RISIS Portal.
Part 1 and Part 2 BA(Ed), BA CDL Finals and PGCE; NUIST Parts 0, 1 and 2
Students on these programmes will receive an email with their results on 20 July by 12noon.
International Foundation Programme (January cohort)
Students on this programme will receive an email with the results on 5 August by 12noon.
What if my results are showing as not yet available (RYNA) by the date relevant date set out above?
This can happen for a number of reasons such as late submission of an assessment or an unavoidable delay in marking. If your overall result states Results Not Yet Available (RNYA) then please seek academic advice from your School/Department as soon as possible. If you are unsure who to contact, please ask your Support Centre (or Henley Helpdesk or ISLI Admin Office).
Please note that you still have the option to request to take the examination again through the Post-result Extenuating Circumstances Process for modules where you do have a result even if your overall result for your Part or Degree is showing as RNYA.
What if I missed one or more examination due to an extenuating circumstance?
If you have missed one or more examinations in the summer term due to an extenuating circumstance then you will be able to submit a Post-results Extenuating Circumstances request, explaining why you were unable to sit the exam, following publication of results.
Post-results Extenuating Circumstances requests
If after results publication, you believe that your performance in your centrally timetabled examinations has been affected by an extenuating circumstance in the summer term, you will have five working days to use the Post-results Extenuating Circumstances process through RISIS. You can use the Post-results Extenuating Circumstances process to request to take an examination again if you believe your performance has been affected by an extenuating circumstance in the summer term. Requesting to take an examination again is known as ‘Deemed Not to Have Sat’ (DNS). If granted you will have the opportunity to have a further attempt to sit your exam/s as if it is the first time you have taken the exam. If you are already at your second attempt, you will have a further attempt but this will still be classed as a second attempt.
If you decide to request your results to be DNS and therefore request a further attempt through the Post-results Extenuating Circumstances, and it is granted, your earlier module mark will appear as a 0 DN.
Your decision to request DNS may have important implications if it is granted. In particular, your further attempt will replace your earlier mark. This means that your original mark will be deleted, and will be replaced by the mark for your further attempt, even if it is lower. You do NOT get the better of the two marks and the mark of your further attempt will count even if you fail. It is important to note that once a further attempt has been requested and granted, you cannot then choose not to do the examination. A mark of zero will be given for any examination not sat. This is a particularly important consideration if you have already achieved the grades that will allow you to progress or complete your degree.
Evidence should be submitted at the same time as your Post-results Extenuating Circumstances request, or within ten working days of the publication of results if this is not possible. Any evidence presented after this date will be considered but your request may not be processed in time for you to take your exams in the August/September period. If you cannot provide evidence, you will have the opportunity to explain this on the form.
It is important that you do not make any decisions until you have sought academic advice from your School/Department.
Please read this guidance carefully and discuss your results with your School/Department representative as soon as possible within these five working days to give you enough time to make the best decision. We want to make sure you receive the best academic advice possible before you make any decisions. Your School/Department will give you personalised, programme-specific advice on the best course of action, including advantages and disadvantages of requesting DNS.
Information about who will be available to speak to and when during these five working days will be sent to you by your School/Department in advance. However, if you are still not sure whom to contact then please contact your Student Support Coordinator, or the HBS School Office/ISLI Helpdesk as appropriate.
If the result of your further attempt means you fail the degree or fail to progress to the next part of your studies, you retain the right to resit. The next opportunity for you to resit the assessment(s) will be summer term 2022. Please refer to Section 28 of the Assessment Handbook for more information.
What do I need to consider before requesting ‘Deemed Not to Have Sat’ (DNS) through the Post-results Extenuating Circumstances process?
There are some circumstances where a further attempt at an assessment (DNS) may not be the best option for you, so you need to think very carefully before making this commitment. For example, it may not be the best option if you are in either of the situations below:
- You have achieved an overall pass or degree classification which is similar to the marks you normally achieve.
- You are a Part 1 student who has achieved marks that allow you to progress into Part 2. Because marks in Part 1 do not generally contribute to your final degree result, it will usually be best to focus on your studies ahead instead of retaking.
We encourage you to discuss your results with your School/Department representative as soon as possible within the five working days if you are considering requesting ‘Deemed Not to Have Sat’.
When do the five working days start?
The five working days start after the release of the results (i.e., the date of the original result email sent to the student from the Exams Team). The five working days will expire at 11.59 pm (BST) on the fifth working day after results publication and it is your responsibility to work out when your five working days end.
Please note that if you were sent subsequent result emails due to a mark change or the resolution of a Result Not Yet Available mark, your five-day timeframe will still be from the first email you were sent notifying you of your results. If you are sent a subsequent email after the five-day timeframe and wish to submit a Post-results Extenuating Circumstances request against a revised mark, please contact your Student Support Co-ordinator.

To give you enough time to make the best decision, it is very important that you seek academic advice as soon as possible after you receive your results if you are considering requesting DNS. Please refer to the Post-results Extenuating Circumstances Policy information on Essentials for further guidance.
A resit is different to being ‘Deemed Not to Have Sat’ (DNS). A resit is a second attempt of assessment and is offered to students who have failed or are not qualified in the relevant Part, or who have failed a module (PGT). This would appear as a second attempt on your transcript and be subject to capping in classification. For more details about resits please refer to Section 28 of the Assessment Handbook for more information.
Non-finalist undergraduates or students on an Integrated Master’s programme
Non-finalist students registered on an undergraduate programme or an Integrated Master’s programme have a right to re-assessment, on one occasion only, if they have failed or are not qualified in the relevant Part and will automatically be offered a resit for the next available exam period.
Postgraduate taught students
Students registered on postgraduate taught programmes have a right to re-assessment, on one occasion only, in any module which they have failed and will automatically be offered a resit for the next available exam period. The exception to this is the dissertation module where the right to resit is restricted (see Section 28.6.3 of the Assessment Handbook).
Undergraduate and Integrated Master’s programme finalists
Finalist students registered on an undergraduate programme or an Integrated Master’s programme only have the right to resit where they have failed their degree overall. Please note that where a finalist is eligible for resits, their overall classification will be capped at a Pass degree, with the exception of Integrated Masters, MPharm Pharmacy, BSc Architecture and BSc Speech and Language Therapy.
How will I be offered my resits in a failed module?
Non-finalist students will be offered the opportunity to select resits either via a link in your results email or via a subsequent email from the Exams Team. Details about selecting your resits will be included in these emails. The deadline for selecting which modules to resit is 20 July 2021.
