This page contains specific Frequently Asked Questions for international students on retakes and resits. For general Frequently Asked Questions please see our page on Advice for retakes and resits.
What if I’m still waiting for my resit/retake results when I need to apply to extend my visa?
If your Tier 4 visa is due to expire before you expect to receive your resit/retake results in late October/early November and you are in the UK continuing on your programme, you will need to apply for a new Tier 4 visa before your current visa expires. For further information this, please contact our International Student Advisory Team at email@example.com.
My sponsor requires me to demonstrate I have progressed to the next stage of my studies. What should I do?
In September, you can contact your Support Centre and we will provide you with an official letter explaining the situation to give to your sponsor.
What if my visa will expire before I return to the UK?
If you are continuing with your programme from outside the UK whilst awaiting your resit/retake results, you are not required to hold a Tier 4 visa to participate in your studies from outside the UK. You will need to advise our Home Office Compliance Officer that you are doing this, if your current visa has or is shortly expiring. To do this please email firstname.lastname@example.org.
As soon as you have confirmation that you have passed your resits, you can request a new CAS and apply for your new Tier 4 visa to return to the UK to continue your studies on campus.
Please note that, while we are making arrangements to support students who need to study remotely initially at the start of the autumn term, we expect all students to return to campus as soon as they are able to.
Subject to government advice at the time, we are currently planning to expand the number of teaching sessions that take place on campus from January 2021. Therefore, it is our hope that we will not need to continue interactive sessions online in the spring term, although content that would usually be delivered through larger classes may still need to be provided digitally.
That is why, if you are unable to be on campus at the start of the autumn term, you should plan to return as soon as possible, by January at the latest. For further information please see our Autumn 2020 page.
Will the publication of the September re-sit/retake results in late October or early November affect the sponsorship of my visa?
If you have a valid Tier 4 visa, the University will maintain visa sponsorship if you continue to engage in your studies. This means, you enrol and continue into the next Part of your programme whilst awaiting your resit/retake results.
When you receive your results in late October/early November, the outcome of these may affect your visa depending on your own specific scenario as follows:
If you pass your September resits/retakes you will continue on the Part you will be currently enrolled on as expected. There will be no impact on your Tier 4 visa.
If you do not pass and the September resit/retake was deemed to have been your first attempt, or you are granted a second attempt at your exams, then visa sponsorship will be maintained until you have the opportunity to take your next attempt, providing you are also continuing on your programme which you enrolled on for the academic year 2020/21.
If the September resit/retake was your final attempt at your exams and coursework and you have not passed, you will not then be able to continue on your programme. This means sponsorship for your Tier 4 visa will be withdrawn at this point. The Home Office Compliance team at the University would communicate with you if this is the case.
