How Careers are supporting final year students during COVID-19
We appreciate that deciding on your next steps for life after university can often feel daunting and that the impact of COVID-19 may be causing further uncertainty and confusion for you.
Careers are here to help you through this time and we are running a fully digital service to continue providing information, advice and guidance that will support you with your graduate job search. This means that you can continue to book telephone appointments and attend our series of summer webinars.
If your graduate job search has been directly affected by COVID-19 (e.g. a role that you have accepted has been withdrawn, or your assessment centre or interview has been cancelled) let us know by using the form below. A member of our team will be in touch to follow this up with you as soon as possible.
Whilst you may be feeling anxious about how the current situation will affect your career opportunities, there are a number of positive steps that you can take to be proactive. For example:
- Do not let the current situation stop you from applying. Employers will be thinking about the long term, as well as the short term. Whilst there is uncertainty, and some sectors will be more affected than others, organisations will be looking to establish ‘business as normal’ as quickly as possible. You can expect the process to take longer than usual and the recruitment process to look different… but using this time productively now will give you an edge when normality resumes.
- Familiarise yourself with remote recruitment tools. One trend that we are seeing is a move towards graduate recruiters using remote assessments, which includes online tests, virtual assessment centres and Skype/video interviews. As well as familiarising yourself with these, create a free account with Graduates First and check out this great blog on remote interviews.
- Be patient. If you are waiting to hear back from an employer(s) about a role that you have applied for, bear in mind that this process may take longer than usual. Employers will be thinking about the best way to move forward but, if you are yet to receive any communication, you may wish to reach out to them and ask for an update. Remember to be understanding and don’t expect an immediate response.
We have also made the decision to open our online careers course, Career Smart, back up to those students in their final year. This means that if you did not get the chance to take part during the summer, you can secure your place on the course, which starts in early June, using the link below. Career Smart has been designed to support students to get graduate application ready and can be completed at a convenient time to suit you.
