University accommodation - frequently asked questions
I have changed my mind about living in halls can I cancel my contract?
If you have already accepted the terms and conditions, and paid the deposit for your room, we cannot unfortunately cancel your contract immediately.
You are only able to break your contract in the following circumstances:
1.You inform us within 7 working days of entering into the contract that you no longer require the room (only applies if you have not been to the University, or met with the accommodation staff, due to distance selling laws) 2.If you are no longer coming to the university 3.If a suitable replacement student for your room can be found* 4.If you have suitable welfare grounds for no longer being able to live in halls**
*The student cannot already have an application that is being dealt with by the accommodation team. If you do not already know of a suitable replacement, we can place your application on a waiting list, and will attempt to assist you to find someone.
**Please note, welfare grounds are defined as serious illness or disability that has occurred after entering into the contract or a serious change in personal circumstances (supporting documentation will be required).
I am withdrawing/suspending from University, what will happen to my accommodation contract?
If you are withdrawing/suspending from the University, you will be required to pay for your room from the date of your departure for four weeks.
Please note, your contract cancellation may be subject to administrative fees.
If I drop out of halls will I get my deposit back?
If you have been allowed to break your contract with the University, you will have your deposit returned in certain circumstances only, subject to the administrative fees being deducted. These fees may be waived if you have extenuating circumstances. Please see your contract for information on these fees.
If I leave my room early do I have to keep paying for it?
If you leave your room early, but have not been given permission to break your contract, you will be responsible for paying for your room until the end of your contract.
Can I take a break from paying my contract if I am going to be away for a while?
You cannot take a break from paying your contract if you are going to be away from your room for a short period. If you believe that you will not need your accommodation for a significant portion of the contract period, please contact accommodationonline@reading.ac.uk to see if you are able to arrange a shorter term prior to agreeing to your contract. We will not normally be able to alter a contract after you have entered into it
