Student money support for the year ahead

Financial advice

We understand that the COVID-19 pandemic may cause financial concerns for our students for a variety of reasons.

Our Student Financial Support team are here to provide advice and guidance about what temporary or permanent help might be available in your particular circumstances. Please contact them as soon as possible if you are in this situation.

We have made additional funds available to support those students who are facing unexpected financial hardship because of the pandemic, through our Alumni & Supporter Engagement Office and the government. If you are struggling to pay for essential living costs (such as rent or food) please visit the Money Matters on Essentials, where you can find advice and signposting to external services, as well as how to apply to our Student Support Fund (hardship fund). We are also relaunching our Digital Support Fund for eligible students.

If you are struggling to pay rent due to the COVID-19 outbreak, please visit the team’s webpage where you can find specific information and advice about how they may be able to help. The Vice-Chancellor has written to private landlords to remind them of their obligations to support their tenants through this difficult period. You may wish to draw this to the attention of your landlord if you feel it appropriate.

All students also have access to Blackbullion, a free online tool offering advice and courses to help those at university in particular to manage their finances.  Read how the Student Financial Support team can support you.

You can also contact RUSU’s Advice Service for further support and independent advice.

The UK government also published information about the implications of the current situation for students with loans through the Student Loans Company.

If you need to self-isolate, for any reason, you must stay at your current address and not travel elsewhere. For example, if you are living in halls or private accommodation, you will need to self-isolate there and not travel to your family home.

See the UK government guidance on what you can and cannot do and why self-isolating (quarantining) when you arrive in the UK is important.
